Nady lifts Pirates past ChiSox

06/17/2007 - Pittsburgh, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Xavier Nady snapped a seventh-inning tie with a two-run single and Jason Bay made a game-saving catch in the ninth, as the Pittsburgh Pirates held on for an 8-7 victory over the Chicago White Sox in the rubber match of a three-game series at PNC Park.

Nate McLouth was 2-for-4 with four runs batted in for the Pirates, who have won four of their last six. Jose Bautista added a homer and a big RBI double in the victory.

Juan Uribe drove in two runs for Chicago, which has lost 10 of its last 12.

The game was tied at 5-5 heading to the bottom of the seventh, but McLouth started the go-ahead rally with a one-out walk from Nick Masset (2-3). He was forced at second on a grounder to third by Jason Bay, who barely beat the relay throw to first to keep the inning alive.

Boone Logan replaced Masset and was greeted by a ground-rule double from Adam LaRoche. Mike MacDougal then came on and Nady delivered a line single to right-center field to chase home both runners for a 7-5 edge.

The White Sox had two on with one out in the top of the eighth, but Shawn Chacon struck out Jermaine Dye and Damaso Marte retired Rob Mackowiak on a fly ball to center field.

Pittsburgh added a huge run in the bottom of the eighth when Jack Wilson singled with one out and scored on a two-out double by Bautista.

The extra run proved to be important because Chicago rallied in the ninth against closer Matt Capps.

Josh Fields led off with a single and it could have been an easy inning if second baseman Jose Castillo had come up with Alex Cintron's hard-hit grounder with one out. Instead of a game-ending double play, the error put runners on the corners.

A.J. Pierzynski then slapped a pinch-hit single to center for a run and Jim Thome followed with an opposite-field drive toward the left field corner. Bay made a leap at the wall and hauled it in, as Cintron scored to make it 8-7. Pierzynski also advanced to second on the deep drive, but was stranded there when Tadahito Iguchi flied out down the right field line.

Capps notched his fifth save and Chacon (3-1), back in the bullpen after a brief stint as a starter, earned the win. Pittsburgh starter Zach Duke gave up five runs on eight hits in six innings.

Chicago's Javier Vazquez also worked six innings and was tagged for five runs on seven hits with one walk and eight strikeouts.

Bautista hit Vazquez's second pitch of the bottom of the first over the wall in left field for his sixth homer of the season to give Pittsburgh an early lead.

After a strike'em-out, throw'em-out double play to end the top of the second, the Pirates added two more in the bottom of the inning. Wilson and Duke each singled with one out and raced home on a two-out double by McLouth.

Chicago answered with five in the fourth. Andy Gonzalez led off with a single, took third on a double by Iguchi and scored on a sacrifice fly by Paul Konerko. Dye then singled home Iguchi and Luis Terrero singled before a ground-rule double by Fields scored Dye to tie the game at 3-3. Uribe doubled home both runners to put the White Sox briefly in front.

McLouth tied it for the Pirates in the bottom of the fourth with a two- run double. Ronny Paulino led off with a double and advanced to third when Wilson reached on a fielder's choice. After Duke bunted Wilson to second, Bautista popped up for the second out, but McLouth ripped a double into the right field corner to tie the game at 5-5.

Neither team threatened again until Pittsburgh reclaimed the lead in the seventh.

Problem with Bears?

Chicago, IL - New Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler and star linebacker Brian Urlacher shot down reports of a rift, saying they're simply not true.

"There's nothing between us," Cutler said Thursday, when he reported to training camp. "I just want to put that to rest. There never has been anything between us."

Urlacher added: "I never said what I was quoted as saying and that's it. I have a lot of respect for Jay. I think Jay knows that."
Former Bears receiver Bobby Wade caused a stir when he told Minneapolis radio station KFAN-AM that Urlacher used a profanity while questioning Cutler's manhood during a conversation in Las Vegas last weekend. Wade, who now plays for the Vikings, said Urlacher used a profane version of the word "wimp" during the interview that had to be edited out.
go radio station WSCR-AM also reported that Urlacher had to be restrained from confronting Cutler during organized team activities.
"I wouldn't go face-to-face with Brian, anyway," Cutler said. "No, that's never happened. I've hung out with Brian away from the facility numerous times and we've always gotten along."
Urlacher, noting he was limited by a groin injury, denied the reports in an interview with the Chicago Tribune and did it again when he reported to camp.
"I didn't practice this summer, so I don't know how I would fight the guy if I didn't practice," Urlacher said. "We have no problems. I'm excited about football starting. I'm excited to have him as our quarterback."
Why would Wade say that?
"I don't know," Urlacher said. "Maybe he's jealous because we have a good quarterback now."
Cutler said the first he heard of any friction was when he got a call from Urlacher to clear the air. Urlacher, however, said he had already taken several calls from teammates wondering if the reports were true when Cutler phoned.
"He called me and I said, What's up (expletive), what are you doing?'" a grinning Urlacher said, uttering the same word he allegedly used with Wade. "It's so dumb to me that this even got to this point, but it did and then here we are."
better place after going 9-7 and missing the playoffs for the second straight year. They have a franchise quarterback for the first time in decades after acquiring Cutler in an offseason trade with Denver. But there are questions about his attitude following a fallout with Broncos management and new coach Josh McDaniels.
His critics include former Bears coach Mike Ditka and former Indianapolis and Tampa Bay coach Tony Dungy, one of Smith's mentors. Smith, however, said Cutler has been a model teammate so far while denying any animosity with Urlacher.
"There's no issue with Jay and Brian, except Brian and Jay are both excited about being teammates for our club this year," coach Lovie Smith said. "No more than that. We can't spend a whole lot of time on something that isn't true. I have talked to the players. Whenever something comes out, you have to address it, but it's a non-issue."
In some ways, Cutler is getting a second chance in Chicago, an opportunity to repair his reputation.
Smith said another quarterback - Michael Vick - deserves one, although he doesn't see it happening with the Bears, who lack an experienced backup. The former Atlanta Falcons star, who served a 23-month sentence for running a dogfighting ring, said Thursday he is getting close to signing with a pro football team.
"A second chance, like everyone in society who has paid their debt to society," Smith said. "He deserves a second chance. As far as we're concerned, we like this team that we have right now."
Particularly the new quarterback.
"Me and Brian have been on a good relationship since I've been here, and I expect it to continue that way," Cutler said.
