04/30/2010 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The Atlanta Braves turn to a hard-luck youngster tonight in hopes of snapping a nine-game losing streak when they return home to meet the visiting Houston Astros in the opener of a three-game series at Turner Field.
The Braves dropped a 10-4 decision to St. Louis in the finale of a four-game set on Thursday at Busch Stadium - marking their first four-game sweep at the hands of the Cardinals since 1989.
Atlanta has been outscored, 44-17, in the nine straight losses.
Right-hander Tommy Hanson makes his fifth start of the season for the Braves and can continue a streak in which he's allowed two earned runs or less in each outing.
The 23-year-old was on the short end of a rain-shortened 1-0 verdict against the New York Mets at Citi Field on April 25, allowing five hits and an unearned run in five innings.
He's allowed just 19 hits and five earned runs in his initial 21 innings of 2010, though it's yielded just one win and one no-decision, in addition to a pair of defeats.
Hanson made one start against Houston in his rookie season of 2009, allowing five hits in eight scoreless innings while getting a no-decision.
He was 11-4 in 21 overall starts with a 2.89 earned run average.
The Astros counter with righty Brett Myers, who will be starting in place of the injured Wandy Rodriguez. Rodriguez is dealing with back spasms, so Myers gets the nod instead, as he tries for his second straight win.
Myers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday, holding them to a pair of runs and 11 hits in six innings to run his record to 1-1, while lowering his ERA to 3.81.
He is 4-9 lifetime versus the Braves with a 4.52 ERA in 28 games (21 starts). However, he hasn't won a start in Atlanta since 2007 and is 0-3 in his last six starts against the Braves.
In Houston, Joey Votto's two-run homer in the seventh inning provided the decisive runs as the Reds took a 4-2 win over the Astros to complete the three-game sweep and give Roy Oswalt a very rare loss against Cincinnati.
Oswalt (2-3) entered Thursday's contest with a 23-1 lifetime record against the Reds and didn't pitch badly, giving up three runs on eight hits and four walks over seven innings. He also struck out seven, but the Reds dealt him the loss thanks to Votto's homer and a good performance from Bronson Arroyo.
Hunter Pence batted 2-for-4 with a solo shot for the Astros, who ended their homestand with a 5-4 record.
Houston has split its season series with the Braves in each of the last three seasons.

JUPITER, Fla. -- The Foorida Marlins are preparing for the likelihood that right-hander
Josh Johnson won't be ready when the season starts April 2.
Grapefruit League action starts Wednesday, but Johnson, penciled in as the No. 2 starter, hasn't even thrown off a mound at full speed since September. He's experienced some soreness in his right forearm.
MySportsbook.com have the Marlins listed with baseball betting lines at +800 to win the NL East this season .
''You guys know the math. If he's not on the hill then he becomes an opening day roster issue,'' manager Fredi Gonzalez said Saturday. ''We're borderline now.''
Johnson, who finished 12-7 with a 3.10 ERA in 2007, was supposed to throw on flat ground Saturday. That was canceled when he woke up with pain.
He played catch on Wednesday with no pain but felt discomfort in a throwing session on Thursday. He's expected to try again Sunday.
''Like we always said from the very beginning, we're going to take it easy on him,'' Gonzalez said. ''He didn't feel right, so we shut him down. We're going to take it back to step one and see where we're at.''
Among the candidates to take Johnson's spot in the rotation are left-hander Chris George and right-handers Yusmeiro Petit and Jose Garcia.
Right-hander Sergio Mitre, who missed most of last season with arm and shoulder problems, also is behind.
With Johnson's status doubtful, Gonzalez said right-hander Ricky Nolasco will stay in the rotation and no longer will be considered a candidate for closer.
